Modernization at KU Summerfield Hall 

MEI has been providing elevator maintenance and repairs for Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas for several years and this year, MEI completed a modernization project in Summerfield Hall. Summerfield Hall is a four-story building on campus that is used by hundreds of students studying film and media studies.

After experiencing problems with one of the Dover hydraulic elevators, MEI noted that the Dover solid state boards were obsolete and could not be repaired. Branch Manager Rob Gress and service mechanic Allen Williams approached KU and provided them with a proposal to have the elevator modernized. Since MEI and KU have built a strong relationship over the past years, KU agreed with MEI’s recommendations and the contract was signed to begin the project.

Throughout the modernization, MEI installed a MEI power unit, Vertitron controller and reflex selector, a GAL MOVFR door operator and Innovation fixtures. This project was even completed ahead of schedule which made the customer very happy. The elevator was back in service faster than expected, demonstrating MEI’s commitment to minimizing downtime.

At MEI, we strive to provide excellent customer service and take care of all our customers’ elevator needs. This successful modernization was completed by mechanic Bryant Gish and apprentice Wes Cook.

MEI Completes Repairs at Hilton Garden Inn

The Hilton Garden Inn in Independence, MO approached MEI in July 2019 with elevator issues that their current service provider would not upgrade unless they completed a full modernization on the units. As we know, full modernizations on three elevators in a hotel is not ideal as it is very expensive and causes a lot of inconveniences for their staff and most importantly, their guests.

MEI responded right away. We surveyed the job and gave the Hilton a proposal to repair/replace certain components on two passenger elevators and one service elevator in order to make them more reliable and safer for their staff and guests.

In August, MEI began working on replacing both passenger elevator door clutches and all three elevators required new interlock arms and interlock contacts on every floor. A new submersible power unit was also installed.

The Hilton was so pleased with the quick, reliable work performed by MEI that after all upgrades were made, they signed a service agreement with us as well. Their elevators are back in reliable operation thanks to MEI’s targeted approach.

The MEI team who helped make this project successful included Branch Manager Rob Gress, Account Manager Billy Mitchell and Mechanic James Kennedy.

MEI Solves the “Shake, Rattle and Roll”

Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, KS have had a service contract with MEI for more than four years. During that time, they have become a loyal customer who count on us for all their elevator needs.

The case was no different when the north elevator went down in their Mother House and it needed immediate attention as it is used daily. The MEI team stepped in to find the problem and worked to get it fixed as fast as possible.

After surveying the job, it was discovered they would need to modernize the elevator in order to get it back in working condition. We were able to rush the equipment and got it started five weeks faster than normal lead times.

The 4,000 lb. traction passenger elevator received a new overhead traction machine, rope gripper, controller, hoistway wiring, new fixtures and a new machine room.

When the modernization was complete, Sister Rita, the Mother House Administrator said, “MEI just completed a total remodel of an old elevator that used to ‘shake, rattle and roll’ whenever it moved between floors. Our experience with MEI, their management and workers was one that even our housekeeping staff commented on. A housekeeper stopped me in the halls to comment that the workspace was left cleaned, vacuumed and everything in place every time they worked there. The elevator remodeled was one that is in a critical place in the building and has a very heavy ridership. Everyone comments on how smooth the ride is and what a great difference it has made especially in their confidence riding. MEI has always been very responsive when we have had needs with any of our elevators. I am very grateful that we are working with a company like MEI who is responsive in a reasonable timeframe.”

The elevator is now back in service and operating smoothly for residents and visitors. The MEI team that made this modernization possible were Branch Manager Rob Gress, Account Manager Leslie Hays, Project Manager Dana Enemark and Mechanics Bryant Gish, Wes Cook, Justin Kennedy and Dennis Smith.
